At least thirty wildflowers are in bloom or beginning to bloom in the southern part of the state. Species that are at or near their peak include sharp-lobed hepatica, spring beauty, white and yellow trout lilies, bloodroot, cut-leaved toothwort and purple cress. The following spring wildflowers are beginning to bloom: wood poppy, sessile trillium, yellow corydalis, giant cohosh, blue phlox, Virginia bluebells, twinleaf, early saxifrage, and false rue-anemone to name a few. Harbinger-of-spring is about done blooming and is beginning to produce fruit.
At Scioto Brush Creek State Nature Preserve, Jacob’s ladder, Virginia bluebells, yellow and white trout lilies, spring beauty, purple cress and cut-leaved toothwort are in bloom.
This will be the weekend to visit Gladys Riley Golden Star Lily Nature Preserve in Scioto County to see the golden-star. It should be at its peak.
More plants are beginning to bloom in central Ohio. At Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve sharp-lobed hepatica and bloodroot are at their peak with Virginia bluebells, Dutchman’s-breeches, miterwort, bluets, wild ginger and purple cress are beginning to bloom. It is amazing that snow trillium is still blooming at Clifton Gorge.
Marsh marigolds are beginning to bloom in central Ohio. At Christmas Rocks State Nature Preserve you can see a number of them blooming in the wetlands near the parking lot. And at Stages Pond State Nature Preserve purple cress, common blue violet, spring beauty and cut-leaved toothwort are in bloom with Dutchman’s-breeches in bud. .
As normal, northern Ohio is considerably farther behind the southern part of the state with skunk cabbage in full bloom or starting to pass. Sharp-lobed hepatica and harbinger-of-spring are in full bloom. Trout lilies are in bud and may start blooming this weekend in parts of the north. At Goll Woods State Nature Preservesharp-lobed hepatica and harbinger-of-spring are in bloom and trout lily, sessile trillium and spring beauty along the trails.
