Free Walks Focus on Historic Areas that Helped Shape City of Columbus
Columbus Public Health and the Columbus Landmarks Foundation are launching the new Spirit of Neighborhoods: Culture Walks – a series of free walking tours that celebrate historic Columbus neighborhoods.
The 90 minute walks, which focus on neighborhoods that have shaped the City of Columbus geographically, culturally and socially, include Parsons Avenue, Hanford Village, King-Lincoln and Westgate. The neighborhoods were selected for rich and diverse histories that were impacted by migration, immigration, urbanization, industrialization and marginalization.
2017 Culture Walks by date and neighborhood (meeting location) include:
- Sept. 16 – 11 a.m. – King-Lincoln (Lincoln Theater, 769 E. Long St.)
- Sept. 30 – 10 a.m. – Parsons Avenue (Hungarian Reformed Church, 365 E. Woodrow)
- Oct. 7 – 9 a.m. – Westgate (Westgate Park Shelterhouse, 3271 Wicklow Dr.)
- Oct. 21 – 11 a.m. – Hanford Village (Hanford Historical Marker, Corner of S. Nelson Rd. & Gault St.)
Spirit of Neighborhoods: Culture Walks is made possible with support from Ohio Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Each walk will begin with broad historical context and significant themes, and then dive into stories of neighborhood life – celebrations, family traditions, faith and resolve.
The walks support Columbus Public Health’s efforts to promote physical activity to protect health and improve lives. The Culture Walks build on the annual series of Art Walks & Landmark Talks organized by Columbus Public Health and Columbus Landmarks and sponsored by the Greater Columbus Arts Council.
Advanced registration is not required. Tours will begin promptly at the time and location listed.
Walks will continue in light rain. In the event inclement weather forces the cancellation of the walk, check Columbus Landmarks Foundation’s Facebook page for updates.
