On Aug. 4, prepare to be sent to the chopping block at the Ohio State Fair’s “Chopped” Cook Off. Whether you’re a professional, amateur or just checking off an item on your bucket list, all are encouraged to participate in this food-tastic event and become the next Chopped champion.
In the on-site, two-part competition, contestants will bring their 10 favorite ingredients to be used along with two mystery ingredients to create an appetizer in just 20 minutes. If you’re lucky enough to surpass the chopping block in round one, contestants will be required to create and present an entrée and side dish using the remaining ingredients from the first round in 30 minutes.
According to Food Network, here are some of the biggest mistakes made during the TV competition and how to avoid them.
Problem: Overcooking or Undercooking
Solution: Prepare your ingredients before cooking so that you don’t have to multi-task while the food cooks.
Problem: Letting the Heat Out of the Oven
Solution: Don’t open the oven door! Keep the door shut to allow the food to bake evenly and at a faster speed. If you need to look at the food, use the oven light and look through the window.
Problem: Using a Cold Pan
Solution: Don’t begin cooking until your oil starts to pop and becomes shimmery, but don’t wait too long or the oil will start to burn.
Solution: Add salt, pepper or herbs to every dish to give it some flavor! Season the dish as you go and make sure to taste it along the way so you don’t get too much or too little seasoning.
Be sure to keep these tips in mind and get ready to cook your way through the competition to become the Ohio State Fair “Chopped” Cook-Off Champion.
