COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s basketball defeated Rutgers, 76-62, Saturday afternoon at Value City Arena. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 14-7, 4-6 in the Big Ten, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 11-10, 4-7 in conference play.
Kaleb Wesson led Ohio State with a game-high 27 points to go along with five assists while C.J. Jackson poured in 20 while pulling down seven boards. Eugene Omoruyi led Rutgers with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists while Caleb McConnell scored 14 points.
After Rutgers opened with an 8-4 lead on an Omoruyi layup less than five minutes into the first half, the Buckeyes’ Wesson took over and scored the next eight points to spark an 11-0 Ohio State run to give the Buckeyes a 15-8 edge with 12:17 left to play. Ohio State then pushed its lead to 13 at 37-24 on a Wesson jumper with 1:37 remaining but Rutgers scored the final five points of the half to cut the Buckeye lead to 37-29 at the break.
Wesson led Ohio State with 21 points at the half while Luther Muhammad added six. Omoruyi paced the Scarlet Knights with nine while Shaquille Doorson chipped in with five. The Buckeyes did not turn the ball over in the first 20 minutes.
Ohio State was able to hold the Scarlet Knights at a distance throughout the second half. After Doorson made a layup to open the half, Jackson scored the next five for Ohio State to push the lead to 11 at 42-31 with 18:09 left to play. The Buckeye lead swelled to 76-60 in the final minute as the Buckeyes connected on 14 of 23 shots from the field in the second half to pick up the win.
