IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 16 Ohio State men’s basketball team fell to Iowa, 72-62, Saturday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. With the defeat, the Buckeyes drop to 12-4 overall, 2-3 in the Big Ten, while the Hawkeyes improve to 14-3, 3-3 in conference play.
Andre Wesson led Ohio State with 13 points while C.J. Jackson chipped in with 10. Luke Garza paced the Hawkeyes with 16 points while Tyler Cook added 15 points and eight boards.
Neither team held a lead of more than four points in a back-and-forth first half. The Hawkeyes went up 11-7 after a Cook 3-point play with 14:45 left in the half but Ohio State used a pair of Musa Jallow 3-pointers to go on a 10-2 run over the next 4:32 to take a 17-13 advantage with 10:13 remaining. The teams then exchanged leads before a Justin Ahrens 3-pointer 1:16 before the half gave Ohio State a 26-24 lead heading into the break.
Luther Muhammad paced Ohio State with seven points before the half while Ryan Kriener led Iowa with seven.
Ohio State extended its lead to 28-24 on a Kyle Young layup with 19:24 remaining but Iowa went on a 13-2 run over the next 3:54, including seven points from Garza, to take a 37-30 advantage with 15:30 left to play. The Hawkeyes then found themselves in the bonus and up 46-39 with 9:21 left to play before scoring their next 10 points from the free-throw line. An Isaiah Moss 3-pointer then a layup by Garza followed to push the Iowa run to 16-6 and make it a 61-45 Iowa lead with 5:14 left. Ohio State used consecutive 3-pointers from Justin Ahrens and Wesson to cut the deficit to 69-61 with 0:39 left to play but that’d be as close as the Buckeyes would get as Iowa came away with the win.
Iowa, which shot 55.6 percent from the field in the second half, forced the Buckeyes into a season-high 21 turnovers.
Ohio State hosts Maryland at 6:30 p.m. ET Friday.
