Each year, the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association Awards of Excellence recognize organizations throughout Ohio. This year, CRPD received 7 awards for programs like the Wilson Road Park and Trail Head.
In 2014, community surveys were conducted as part of our department’s Master Plan in which 77% of respondents indicated that they had a need for walking and biking trails and 72% of respondents indicated that they have a need for large community parks. We saw an opportunity in an undeveloped 47 acre property on the City’s west side to help meet both of these needs.
This property is located in an area where 28% of individuals are living below the poverty line. It is an area where there is not only a great need for safe, accessible park space, but also a need for parks to be connected to the City wide trail system. The primary purpose of the Wilson Road Park development was to meet the recreational needs of the area by creating a large community park in a neighborhood that is dominated by dense industrial and commercial activity.
